The Minority Elderly Care Project – MEC – A unique research initiative

UK launch under the UK Presidency on 4th October 2005 at Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre;

Findings and publication launched at the European Parliament
(Dec 2004; May 2003)

A major and first of its kind initiative in European Commission’s history of research funding, PRIAE’s MEC project is unique in the way it fills gaps in evidence on BME care needs. This major European research project, to help plan the direction of health and social care services today and in the future, involves ten countries (UK, Finland, France, Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Hungary, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and Switzerland). Its objective is to draw attention to the needs of minority ethnic (ME) elders and thereby improve the provision of services for them. The conference held on 4th October 2005 was designed to look at the research application into policy and practice, which it successfully managed to do with high commendation from speakers on the research results, and as the evaluation comments state in the conference report.

Supported by the European Commission Fifth Framework, MEC is unique in the way it addresses service issues from three directions – Minority ethnic (ME) elders, health and social care professionals and the minority ethnic voluntary organisations. As a result of the MEC project, for the first time statistically significant research evidence is now available on the perceptions, expectations and usage of services of over 20 different ethnic groups in Europe; as well as establishing service providers’ views of what is considered ‘appropriate’ service and how they are meeting diverse needs amid growing elder population.

Recommendations common across all the countries involved in the MEC project – the largest initiative of its kind - have been made representing important strategic actions which organisations and institutions can use to improve their service provision for ME elders.

MEC series of publications about MEC are available, and can be downloaded and/or ordered.
