Extra Care Housing for Black and Minority Ethnic Elders
Department of Health Factsheet
National publication for best practice
The Department of Health has called on PRIAE’s expertise to provide a report on the provision of culturally appropriate extra care housing for Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) elders.
The report, aimed at housing providers and commissioners, presents a set of guidelines on the specific needs of BME elders regarding extra care housing or specially adapted housing that allows older people to ‘age in place’ and retain their independence and, in the context of ethnic minorities, provides a culturally sensitive environment for this. It also gives examples of good practice in development and design plus useful background information on how culture, quality and ageing in a ‘different’ home can be better met if appropriately considered, addressed and adapted.
The report – which applies UK countrywide regarding the issues faced and challenges met or how it can be met – incorporates results from a PRIAE research survey on housing providers and commissioners’ issues when responding to BME elders and their housing needs.
