Quality Hospital Care for BME elders

Creating best practice in hospitals

PRIAE has produced two specific tools from this project: patient diary designed for both minority and majority elders, that is currently seeking a sponsor for its publication and for professionals a self assessment tool to help them work better with patients from diverse ethnic backgrounds.

This Department of Health-funded initiative set practical guidelines for the provision of quality hospital care for Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) elders, from before admission through assessment and treatment to discharge. This was to ensure cultural, linguistic and religious needs were being considered and met by hospitals looking after BME elders.

The project involved one-to-one interviews, discussion groups, seminars and questionnaires to get opinions on equality and diversity from both BME elders and managers/professionals within the health field. The results formed an information bank of best practice from which pilot models were developed and tested.
