Ageing Actively In Minority Communities (AIM)
The Ageing Actively in Minority Ethnic Communities (AIM) Project has been funded by the Department of Health for the past three years (April 2005 – April 2008). The project Activates, Inspires and Motivates (AIM) black and minority ethnic (BME) elders to be more active - working with them rather than on them. The AIM Project engages BME elders and promotes active ageing by advocating culturally sensitive physical activities. It builds on PRIAE’s BAFTA launched film, Playing our part after 50, which showed ageing actively is something that BME elders do in different walks of life.
With the help of 10 key BME community-based projects and 40 older BME individuals, PRIAE commissioned True North Productions to produce the ‘Get Active Today’ DVD. Elders from the South Asian, African, African Caribbean and Chinese communities demonstrate a range of culturally sensitive physical activities, which are appropriate for older people in their communities and they highlight the benefits of being active. Professor Jim McKenna of Leeds Metropolitan University, Carnegie Research Institute, Centre for Active Lifestyles provided the voice over and his team helped to shape the DVD.
The DVD is a motivational resource which Activates, Inspires and Motivates BME elders to be more active. It highlights the effective work already being done in this area by community-based organisations and in people’s own homes - from being active in dance, games, exercise, walking, and simply having an attitude of ‘living well’. Different settings have also been considered - from community-led activities and gyms to home based chair exercises. In addition, the DVD includes the benefits of active ageing, barriers that BME elders face when trying to access mainstream physical activities and bring these to the attention of local and national agencies working in the field of active ageing.
The DVD was officially launched at the Victoria Hall, Leeds Town Hall on the 27th March 2008. Elders as well as representatives from a wide range of community-based organisations, national charities, day care centres, residential care homes, local governments, Universities, NHS organisations, Housing Associations and media attended the event. According to the evaluations completed on the day, all the attendees thought the DVD was an excellent resource.
Their comments on who should see the DVD and why include:
“As many people as possible as the message crosses all the cultural divides and appeals to all older people. Staff need to see it so they can understand and help to deliver the much needed services”
“Everyone!”
“Commissioners, voluntary organisations, social groups … anyone who works with older people”
The funding for the project ended in March 2008. However, copies of the DVD are available by completing an order form. PRIAE requests a donation of £1.50 per DVD plus p&p. Click here to download the order form
