Forthcoming talks and events

  • The final conference for the Securing Care for Ethnic Elders in Scotland (SCEES) project to be held on the 19th of September 2008. Please keep watch for further details.

Talks given by PRIAE staff

  • PRIAE's Executive Director Naina Patel OBE gave the opening presentation at Kluwer Symposium 2025: Multicultural elderly care. The event was held in Arnhem, Netherlands on 10th of June 08. Naina spoke on Europe's minority ethnic elder housing and care, today and tomorrow; a challenge or opportunities.
  • PRIAE launched its Get Active Today DVD on Thursday 27th March 2008 at 12.30pm – 4.30pm at the Victoria Hall, Leeds Town Hall. The DVD involved more than 10 key BME community-based projects and 40 older BME individuals - it was filmed by True North Productions. For more information, go to www.priae.org/projects/aim.htm
  • PRIAE co-hosted a 'Working Lunch on meeting the needs of diverse groups' with the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) on 11th September 2007. PRIAE's Managing Director Kalyani Gandhi spoke on the business case for providing diverse care homes in the UK, outlining current provision, issues and trends within both the public and private sector.
  • PRIAE's Executive Director Naina Patel will be speaking on 'Elders as Learners and Teachers' at a NIACE conference in Leicester on 30th November 2007.
  • PRIAE's Manging Director Kalyani Gandhi contributed to the Department of Health's Consultation on BME Elder Issues for a New National Strategy for Stroke on 17th September 2007.
  • PRIAE's Managing Director Kalyani Gandhi gave a presentation on 'A look at research highlighting the growing BME population across Europe: The moral case for providers entering this market' at a Diversity Roundable hosted by PRIAE and the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) on 11th September 2007.
  • PRIAE's Information and Policy Manager Ian Smith and Project Director Ahsan Malik spoke at the National Pensioners Convention One Day Conference Pensioners' Voices - Pensioners' Rights at Leeds Town Hall on 3rd September 2007 on issues affecting black and minority ethnic elders.
  • PRIAE's Director Naina Patel spoke on 'Service Use: Long Term Care Options - Research and Practice' on 19th April 2007 at A Symposium on Access to Health Care for Ethnic Minority Seniors, Providence Health, Surrey, British Columbia.
  • PRIAE'S Director Naina Patel spoke on 'Black and Minority Ethnic Elders' Housing - needs and challenges' on 28th March 2007 at the Methodist Homes Staff Conference in Nottingham.
  • PRIAE's Director Naina Patel gave the keynote plenary address on 'Minority Ethnic Elders as Users, Consumers and Citizens' at Muliculturalism - New Consumers, New Provider Responses, the 7th International Congress in Malta on 13th February 2007, organised by IAHSA and AARP.
  • PRIAE’s Director Naina Patel spoke in London at Counsel and Care Conference on 16th November 2006.
  • PRIAE’s Director Naina Patel spoke at the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Geneva on minorities ageing on 10th October 2006 to mark the International Day of Older Persons.
  • PRIAE's Project Officer Melnisha Davids with new AIM (Ageing Actively in Minority Communities) Project Manager Vikrant Bhatia ran a PRIAE stand at British Heart Foundation (BHF) National Centre for Physical Activity and Health Conference on 18-19 September 2006 and spoke on BME elders' mental health.
  • PRIAE’s Project Officer for the Minority Ethnic Elders’ Policy Network, Ian Smith, and Mr M A Khan Lodhi, Chair of the South Region Advisory Group for the Minority Ethnic Elders’ Policy Network, ran a stall at this year’s Capital Age Festival on Sunday 20th August 2006.  Information was provided on previous and current projects at PRIAE and elders were given the opportunity to join the Minority Ethnic Elders’ Policy Network.

  • Ian Smith, Project Officer, gave a presentation on PRIAE’s Minority Ethnic Elders’ Policy Network, at BME Elders’ Forum Meeting, Age Concern England, London, 4th July 2006.
  • Sunjeeda Hanif, Project Manager, provided an exhibition of PRIAE’s work at the Grundtvig 1 & 2 Contact Seminar “Lifelong Learning 55+”, Luxembourg, 29th June – 2nd July 2006.
  • Sunjeeda Hanif, Project Manager, gave a presentation on PRIAE’s Minority Ethnic Elders’ Policy Network, at the National Pensioners Convention conference Ageing with Dignity: One Day Conference for Ethnic Elders, Manchester, 21st June 2006.
  • Naina Patel, Director, spoke at the European Research Area in Ageing (ERA) Age Seminar on Research in Bucharest on 19th June 2006.
  • Naina Patel, Director, spoke on PRIAE’s 10 European country research results at the International Federation on Ageing (IFA) Conference in Copenhagen on 31st May 2006.
  • Naina Patel, Director, gave the end of conference address on Policy concerns and BME elders in Europe at the International Association of Homes and Services for the ageing (IAHSA) conference in Brussels on 30th May 2006.

Lauch of PRIAE film Progressing Policy with Passion

PRIAE’s film Progressing Policy with Passion was launched by The Media Trust at BAFTA in London on 20th July 2006

PRIAE works with the whole spectrum of European society, from families and volunteers to governments themselves, in highlighting the problems faced by BME elders with pensions, housing, healthcare and social welfare. In conjunction with The Media Trust and MoveAMountain, PRIAE has made a film with Channel 4's Jon Snow showcasing its work in the UK and thoughts for the future.

CEMESME leads pioneering European network
A UK project which aims to make the corporate culture of British firms more aware of diversity and encourage good relations between people of different ethnic background at work will head the Third European Network to Promote Ethnic Diversity in Employment (ENPEDE) meeting in Vilnius, Lithuania, from 28th September to 1st October.

Improving the quality of life for older ethnic minority women in the UK
PRIAE – the leading body working in the field of ageing and ethnicity in the UK and Europe – has created an important report concentrating on securing financial well-being for ethnic minority women over the age of 40 in Britain.

Health and Social Care in Europe Conference - listed under the UK Presidency and supported by the Department of Health, 4th October 2005

Extra Care Housing Report, 2006
The Department of Health Change Agent Team Director launched PRIAE’s Extra Care Housing Report at the Guardian Conference, 23rd March 2006 in London. PRIAE’s director presented the report paying a tribute to BME elders for raising this issue.
